The Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research is an international, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to basic and clinical research with the ultimate goal of eradicating cancer. The Institute focuses on many aspects of basic and clinical cancer research, including cancer genetics and genomics, tumour immunology and cell growth and differentiation. The Institute’s research is carried out by over 750 scientists, clinicians, and support staff at 10 branches in seven countries, rather than at a single site. This model was chosen to facilitate the worldwide recruitment of scientists and to draw on the different strengths of a variety of laboratory and clinical environments. All branches are situated at major research and hospital centres. The Institute is committed to translating its basic research discoveries into clinical practice. It has established its own Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) reagent production as well as regulatory and monitoring capabilities, and is an active sponsor of its own clinical trials. The Clinical Program of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research was established to facilitate the transition of discoveries from the laboratory to the clinic in a collaborative academic environment. The program’s emphasis is on early stage clinical trials investigating treatments discovered by the Institute’s research laboratories. The translation of the research to the clinic is viewed as the last phase of the initial discovery process, rather than the first phase of commercial development.
