To create the largest neuroscience group in the Southern Hemisphere, the Brain Research Institute, the Howard Florey Institute and the National Stroke Research Institute amalgamated in July 2007 to form Florey Neuroscience Institutes (FNI).
With more than 400 research and support staff on two campuses, FNI scientists are searching for cures to the complex, debilitating and sometimes life threatening brain disorders that affect three million Australians.
Through our clinical and basic research facilities in Parkville and Heidelberg, Victoria, we are investigating Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and motor neuron disease.  We are world leaders in stroke and epilepsy research and have exceptional teams working on multiple sclerosis, addiction and traumatic brain and spinal cord injury among others.

Why study at FNI?
FNI’s students help make medical discoveries that improve the health outcomes of those affected by brain disorders. FNI’s focus on the brain and diverse range of world class scientists makes it an attractive place to undertake postgraduate research. The multidisciplinary nature of brain research means that FNI is privileged to have young researchers whose initial degrees were in biology, medicine, science and engineering.
FNI’s reputation as Australia’s leading neuroscience group has helped the recruitment of high quality researchers from universities within Melbourne, interstate and internationally.
